Six chickens can help feed a family all year round

February 4, 2010

My friend has three chickens; and they are producing about 18 eggs a week. I am becoming a believer in the power of chickens! Obviously, not all of us can raise chickens (I know my neighbors, dog and cat would not much like the idea). But, as an alternative, we can support families by “gifting” chickens through Concern Worldwide http://www.concerngifts.org/product.php?sp_p=D&sp_c=19

Chicks Rule

June 10, 2009

My friend AC lives in the lovely Columbia River Gorge.  Her husband has constructed a beautiful A-frame coop, with a special free range playpen attachment, for AC’s new girls.  The girls are named Lucy, Penny, and Marcella. Really looking forward to the bounty of fresh (blue!) eggs in the Fall.

That is, assuming the girls are girls (vs. roosters). Hard to tell at this age, so let’s all keep our fingers crossed.

I’m a city girl, so this is all very exciting for me.

Lessons learned:

  • Chicks are messy.
  • Chicks love plain organic yogurt.
  • Chicks are ungrateful!

Even though they have splendid digs, they have already tried to fly the coop.
